This side of the grass

My Grandma Johnson turned 92 this weekend. For the last 15 years, she's been saying she doesn't think she'll be around to celebrate her next birthday... and every year, she's still around. Her favorite saying, when you ask her how she's doing, is "Well, I woke up on this side of the grass today, so I guess doin' I'm o-kay..." She wasn't the kind of grandma who baked cookies or took the grandkids for the weekend, but she always let us know how special we were to her (and I was always deemed her "favorite", although I haven't cross-referenced this fact with the other grandkids.) She has lived in the same apartment building since before time began and she's never driven car. But it's the little things... like the fact that she signs every birthday card with the exact number of "xoxoxo's" that you are turning that year, that make her special. So, Happy Birthday, Grandma! Weather you like it not, you're still here! :-) We're glad you are!

She has pictures of everyone all over her house... this was my Grandpa.

She LOVES getting cards and leaves them up for WEEKS!
My wonderful mother-in-law sent these with me for her... she wanted them as close to her as I could possibly put them so she could look at them from her chair all day long... which she will.

I love how much old people are mesmerized by children... they always seem to look at them as if they know something the rest of us don't. Which they most likely do.

My Grandma's wedding ring... her most prized possession. We've had a few close calls, but she hasn't lost it yet. EVERY time she sees me, she reminds me that it will be mine someday. I can wait, Grandma... I'm in no hurry.
